 The Quilt Paintings

Quilts have played an important historical role in telling stories and celebrating lives. The patterns themselves and the choice of fabric describe the person for whom the quilt was created. Using quilts as a background for these portraits allows me to access a deeper sensed of the sitter’s life and story. Each pattern and paper was chosen specifically for the person I am painting as a way of further uncovering a layer of their personality beyond paint. I am trying to describe who I think they are by using unconventional material sources. Old magazines, letters, wrapping, packaging and cookbooks are just some sources that I have used to weave a story about who these people are.
