In my abstract paintings, I am trying to live in the moment-to-moment act of painting without judging what is happening or planning the results. This is the way I wish I could live life, but that would be irresponsible. Im attempting to balance the freedom of impulsive action with the obligations of technique in such a way that the viewer is able to share with me in the creative act.
All my paintings begin as a reaction to something that happened to me. By using a limited palette I am causing an immediate restriction with colour. Using raw canvas I limit my ability to define, as the medium does not allow for sharpness. Raw canvas is forgiving and unforgiving; it allows a freedom in creating composition but absorbs everything you put on it. Mistakes must become part of the story. I work one action at a time, a pour, a splatter, a brushstroke, then allowing that action to reveal and create the next brushstroke. The result created is an organic, cosmic dimension that questions our perception. It's an approach that allows the painting to take on a life of its own. It's not a narrative, as such, but autobiographical. A personal journey directed by a moment of impact and my subconscious.
My paintings are about the energy and movement of the present. By removing the restrictions of identifiable representation, I allow you to insert your own imagination and become part of the paintings story. As your eye moves around the canvas, I hope you will see what I never imagined. I hope you will see worlds within worlds, I hope you will discover something new each time. I hope these canvases make you feel alive. What you see in them is what matters to me.
